Vallabhbhai Patel (October 31, 1875 – December 15, 1950) was an Indian political and social leader who played a major role in the country's struggle for independence and subsequently oversaw its integration into a unified and independent nation. . He was called the "Iron Man of India" and was often called "Sardar", which means "Chief" or "Leader" in many Indian languages.

Vallabhbhai Patel already had a successful law practice when he was first inspired by the work and philosophy of Mahatma Gandhi. Patel then organized the Kheda, Borsad and Bardoli farmers in Gujarat into a non-violent civil society.
the disobedience movement against the oppressive policies of the British Raj; In this role, he became one of the most influential leaders in Gujarat. He rose to the leadership of the Indian National Congress and was at the forefront of the rebellion and political events, organizing the party for the 1934 and 1937 elections and promoting the Quit India movement.

As India's first home minister and deputy prime minister, Patel organized relief efforts for refugees in Punjab and Delhi and led efforts to restore peace across the country. Patel took on the task of forging a unified India out of the 565 semi-autonomous princely states and colonial provinces of the British era. With open diplomacy, backed by the option (and use) of military action, Patel's leadership allowed the accession of almost all the princely states. Celebrated as the Iron Man of India, he is also considered the "patron saint" of Indian civil servants for establishing modern services across India. Patel was also one of the earliest advocates of property rights and free enterprise in India.

young iron man

Long before his foray into the fight for freedom, one can see the strength of his iron will in his passionate pursuit of the law as a career. Endowed with a brilliant mind, Sardar always wanted to be a lawyer. However, to realize this dream, one had to go to England at that time. Born into a humble peasant family, he had no financial means to go to university, not even in India, let alone travel to England.

However, such obstacles were never an obstacle for the steely determined young man as he found a way to achieve his dreams. He taught himself. His first move was to borrow books from a lawyer friend and study from home, and for practical training he began attending court sessions to closely observe every argument that was presented. Needless to say, the young man passed with flying colors and started practicing it at Godhra.

Another facet of his character and compassion is shown when he later had the opportunity to travel abroad, but allowed his older brother, Vitthalbhai, who was also a lawyer, to go to England first to study law. Only after his brother's return did he go to England, where he was the first to pass the bar exam.

Fight for independence advances

Sardar Patel's foray into the freedom struggle was inspired by Mahatma Gandhi, whom he met at a meeting in Godhra. Thereafter they became friends and Patel began to follow Gandhiji's activities, particularly his success at Champaran Satyagraha.

The decisive moment for Sardar came in 1918; Kheda was inundated and devastated by the floods. With their crops damaged, the farmers asked for an exemption from the heavy taxes imposed by the British government, but to no avail. Gandhiji joined the fight but was able to give his full attention to Kheda's fight.

When he was looking for someone to defend the farmers in his absence, Sardar volunteered. As always, he was never half-hearted, and his first move was to abandon his well-paid law practice and join the non-cooperation movement by changing into Khadi regalia. The fight was a resounding success as the British government agreed to hold talks with Sardar and later agreed to his terms on lowering the tax rate. Since then there was no turning back for this son of the earth.
